Sonoma Cottage Rental

(also known as Sonoma Keepers Cottage)

1 BR 1 BA – Sleeps 2

Historic and imaginative, our newly restored 1 BR 1 BA Sonoma Cottage Rental (also known as Sonoma Keepers Cottage), is ideally situated within walking distance to the landmark City of Sonoma Plaza. Charming as can be, this wine-country cottage offers all the comforts of home in a unique private and peaceful setting. Originally built in 1942, as a keeper's cottage, thoughtful interior design elements were used throughout the renovation and decorating, to make it feel much larger than it is. The vaulted ceiling in the open-concept living room/ kitchen/ dining area creates a beautiful cottage size great-room with tasteful cabin-style color and décor. Spatial symmetry divides the cottage in half and integrates each space to harmonize the flow of one room to the next. Three separate outdoor entrances in different points of the cottage, connect the interior to two delightful gardens. Eye-catching artwork placed throughout, and a few selected Sonoma antiques, completes the country-cabin theme.

Interior Layout:

Great-Room - The front entrance to the cottage is through a covered front porch with gabled roof. Step directly into the comfortable great-room that has views of the front and side garden, and mature tree lines. Decorated in pleasing colors of khaki, cream, red, and blue, the floor is a tan Berber carpet. A chocolate brown sofa, red-checked wing-back chair, and a unique tree-slice coffee table create an elegant country-cabin feel. Adjoining the living room, on the east side of the room, is a sliding glass door that leads to a spacious covered sitting porch and side garden. The other side of the living room, connects to the kitchen with a table height breakfast island table and counter stools.

The L-shape kitchen features earth-tone granite counter-tops, honey-tone wooden cabinets, and open shelving of mango-wood with cast iron brackets. White appliances are in nice contrast to the wood, and include a gas range, over-stove micro-wave oven, fridge with ice-maker, and under-counter dishwasher. Keeping with the cabin décor theme, walls are painted brick red, and windows are appointed with custom-made red check curtains. The dining nook features a round painted wooden table and two wooden Windsor chairs, a faux deer-horn chandelier and whimsical painting titled, "Bears on Break." The kitchen/dining room are well lit with ceiling fixtures, that are on dimmer switches to create just the right mood. Flooring is light wood-plank vinyl, which has a nice feel to the foot and at first glance looks like hardwood.

Bathroom - A short hallway off the kitchen leads to an office space and the bathroom. Before we head to the office area, a quick look at the bathroom, which provides a bathtub with in-tub shower, wooden vanity with one-piece sink and countertop, bronze bathroom fixtures, and the same wood-plank vinyl flooring.

Office and Bedroom - Back into the hall, a closing door leads to an inviting office space. Painted in soft teal and cream tones, this space is set up with a beautiful vintage oak desk, and modern adjustable leather office chair - a place where any writer can get creative, or a business person and comfortably catch up on work. A wide window to the left of the desk invites in plenty of light. A room divider screen to the right of the desk, creates a visual division between the office space and the bedroom.

A short step-up, leads through a wide square arch to the carpeted bedroom and with walk-in closet. Painted with the same khaki and cream colors as the living-room, the bedroom is stylishly furnished with a new queen-size western-style plat-form bed, and very comfortable hybrid mattress. On one side of the room, find a beautifully restored vintage oak dresser with attached mirror, and lined with cedar wood. At the back-bedroom wall, the walk-in closet with built-in hard-wood storage shelves, is large enough to dress in and store much more than your clothes. In between the dresser and the closet, another wide window invites natural light in the bedroom, or block the light with blinds. On the opposite side of the bedroom, near the foot of the bed, a linen closet with deep 30-inch deep shelves, provides extra storage for more than linens.

Another nice feature I love about our Sonoma Keepers Cottage, is the additional exterior door located at the opposite end of the office nook. Accessed through a second covered porch outside the door, there is also a screen door, and is a great way to invite fresh breezes into the office / bedroom side of the cottage.

Bedding Summary - 1 Queen size bed.

Laundry Room - The laundry room is located just steps down the patch past the entrance door that leads to the office. It provides a washer / dryer, and laundry sink.

Grounds and Gardens:

Grounds and gardens for this Sonoma Keepers Cottage, have been fenced off and landscaped to provide privacy and create natural boundaries. Outdoor space for this cottage, include an adorable fenced in front yard, complete with small lawn and landscaped with flower beds. Flagstone path from the covered patio leads through a spacious side flower garden to a lighted sitting bench under a live oak tree. Landscaping includes a variety of flowers, vines, shrubs, and native and ornamental trees including California oaks, privets, and mimosa. Depending on the time of year you are here, there is also a vegetable garden. The grounds are kept by a grounds keeper.

Built as a keepers-cottage in 1942, our Sonoma Cottage, was originally part of a multi-acre plum and walnut orchard. Today it is part of a half-acre compound, with one other cottage that is visible from the street, but not visible to this rental cottage. Built on the south side of the property, and towards the middle, this Sonoma Cottage Rental, is quietly nestled in what I like to describe as an 'urban-farm' like setting, with oak and walnut woodland tree lines, and mountain views beyond. With these grounds, this rental cottage is a best kept secret.

Storage / Outbuilding / Studio:

There is an adorable small shed roof doll house-style out-building located right next to the covered porch off the living room. Originally built as a garden shed, it has been fully insulated, painted, and re-roofed, to provide extra storage space to tenants who need it.

Combination of new furniture and restored antiques, interesting artwork. Spacious covered side sitting porch with view of gardens and tree lines.

Area / Activities:

Out the garden gate and to the street, turn left, and you're a few streets from the Sonoma Bike Path where you can walk in 20 minutes or bike in 10 minutes, to the heart of the city of Sonoma, the Historic Sonoma Plaza. Fabulous international and acclaimed restaurants, wine and champagne tasting, cheese factories, bakeries, chocolate tasting, ice cream, cocktail bars, live music, and more. A wonderful variety of locally owned and operated boutique shops surround the Sonoma Plaza, where you won't find any big box stores. You'll also find the Sonoma State Historic Park that includes the original Mission San Francisco Solano, and the site where the California Bear Flag was first raised. The center of the Plaza is a mature arboretum with redwood trees, giant eucalyptus, rose gardens, outdoor amphitheater, duck pond, art installations, and more. Notes:

Over the course four summers, since 2014, the owner has worked to lovingly and artfully restore the grounds as well as the original buildings. This is a unique property in a special Sonoma California setting. Looking for a quiet single mature adult or couple. Great retreat for writers, and those escaping the colder climates in the winter. Ideal for visiting local professional looking for a six month or more stay.
